What Are Electrical Backup Power?

Electrical backup power are electrical power sources that serve as the secondary source of power to the primary source which is normally the electric utility company power. When the primary source fails, the secondary or backup power takes over through an automatic transfer switch. This article will present only the best of electrical backup power out there in the market.

Do not confuse electrical backup power with uninterrupted power supply. These are two systems that could be interconnected but serve two different purpose. While the backup system provides temporary power to the loads when the primary is out, it does take several seconds to start and be online to provide power.

Uninterrupted power supplies however provide instantaneous and immediate power to the load as it is always connected directly to the load.

The Different Forms Of Back Up Power

Depending upon the type of equipment and facility that we would like to provide continuous power to, there are many options for what type of backup power to choose from.

In large power requirements such us whole buildings or compounds as hospitals, hotels, universities, military bases, ships and whole cities etc we normally find large diesel generators serving as back up or emergency power sources. These generators are automatically started using batteries or compressed air upon failure of the primary power source.

Battery banks are still for the most part used for limited power backups or for limited time duration of several hours. Nowadays however, with the advent of huge and powerful battery set ups and configurations, we can use batteries as the main source of power and no longer just the back up. Indeed it is now our choice to use batteries as our main source of power or just the back up power.

If there were no backup generators there would be a lot of places in trouble like hospitals, military bases, and oil rigs like you said but surely they are causing more harm than good to the environment, especially the diesel ones?

I’m no expert but there must be a way in this day and age to not lose power at all than have to wait for the backup generator to kick in?

I used to work on building sites and these generators were the lifeline of the site so if they were out of action then nothing got done.

I’m actually surprised at the price of them, I thought they would be a lot more expensive as they are lifesavers in a way,aren’t they?

    Thanks for stopping by and dropping off your comments and question Matthew! Yes we are now just beginning to have the option not to use smoke-belching diesel generators for backup power! 

    The rapid advancement in battery technology, the continuous drop in prices, help to speed up the transition process for facilities and home owners to batteries. For the most part we are still using the good old reliable diesel generators but the transition is now happening.

    Elon Musk’s Tesla Inc leads the pack with their Powerwall and Powerpack batteries and many more are rising up to compete. The market will increasingly be carrying more manufacturers and we hope to see prices of batteries go down. Solar power setups nowadays have the option to add some amount of battery storage. This system can be adjusted and designed to determine how long the backup battery power will support in terms of hours or even days depending on the load being supported.

Several years ago I helped a friend set up a building business and even built a website for him – they were a group of 5 builders and they grew from strength to strength. I helped them out with labouring on their building site in the early days and these generators were an absolute must to their work – they were near enough their lifeline in bad weather. 

Out of all the backups you’ve listed above, which would you say is the best fit for a modern day building site?

I was confused with the difference between uninterruptible power supplies and electrical backup power. I’m cleared now. So Uninterrupted power supply contains batteries. But electrical backup includes generators and but most times contain batteries.

I want to know what the batteries in generators do. Please help me out asap!

Hi Joe, thank you for your great article.   You’ve explained the main users of electrical backup power.You’ve also explained the difference with Uninterrupted power supplies, as I know the schools in my city all have these.  I learned a lot about the battery banks, they seem to be the most environmentally friendly solutions in the longer term.  I really like the concept of solar power to help fuel these batteries.Being a solopreneur, I’m not really a customer for such but I learned a lot from options from your great article!
