What Are Uninterrupted Power Supplies?

Uninterrupted power supplies (UPS) are just that! They are power sources providing uninterrupted power when there is a main power or primary power source failure and before the diesel, gasoline or propane generator backup power kick on. Remember that backup power takes several seconds to get started and to get connected to the load.  It is great to always have the best of uninterrupted power supplies so you always have ZERO power interruption!

These UPS power sources are your best buddy when you wish to supply continuous power to certain equipment. These power supplies are equipped with a sensing circuit that tells the system that the main source of power has stopped. The UPS automatically kicks on and there is no power interruption whatsoever.

Remember that your UPS will not be part of a transfer switch. It will be directly connected to the equipment when the primary power source fails. This is the major difference between a backup power system and a UPS sytem.

Typical Applications Of Uninterrupted Power Supplies

  • Life support systems
  • Hospitals
  • Data centers
  • Internet Networks
  • Security systems
  • Communications systems
  • Aviation systems as air traffic control equipment
  • Military installations and vessels

Thank you for sharing with us this fantastic review on Best of Uninterrupted power supplies. It is very important for some places to have that kind of power supplies depends on the services delivered. In hospital for example the Doctor is in surgery room operating a patient when the mainpower goes off, imagine what would happen? The patient could die .It is not only hospitals, there are many services delivered because there is power like banks, internet suppliers,…

The post is well detailed and understandable.

Cool options! I believe that every business with an IT infrastructure needs a UPS and of course a UPS that is specifically measured to their infrastructure, so you have enough battery power to last some time.

I’ve seen some businesses with lots of server equipment and an insufficient UPS strategy. Guess what happens when the power goes down… UPS takes over for 1 minute and BAM everything goes down…

I am a computer guy, dad is a master electrician and my girl is in the nursing field. I don’t know how I haven’t heard of these before. I am glad that had the opportunity to read this article. How long do they last without power and are they fed with batteries?

    Hi Anthony!

Most UPS systems use banks of batteries feeding power through inverters. They are designed to kick on instantaneously so that there is zero absence of power to the supported loads.

Thanks for the feedback! Much appreciated! Cheers!

    PS
The amount of time that UPS systems will last during a blackout depends upon the size of the battery bank used. Some units can last a few days. Some , several hours. Using backup generators keep you from depending on the battery backup for longer periods.

Hey Joe,

Thank you very much for your input on The Best Of Uninterrupted Power Supplies. My friend actually asked me to do the research for him as he runs an internet caffe and he recently had some problems with power outages which hurt his business and equipment.

Can you please elaborate on how those power supplies work? Are they on rechargable batteries? For how long could they provide power?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Joe Joson · November 5, 2018 at 7:20 am

    Hello Xaric!
Yes, UPS systems use battery banks that are rechargeable and uses electric utility power to charge them. All the equipment at the internet café will be directly connected to the batteries and should kick in the very second that power to the utility or primary source goes out.

UPS systems are not for extended period of operation however. They vary in size and length of operation while the primary power is out. Most outages in North America are for the short duration type. In times of an extended power outages, backup or standby power is what we need using backup generators.

    Hope this helped.
